Abstract
PURPOSE: To shorten the etherification time and to reduce the amount of an etherifying agent, by dissolving carboxymethyl cellulose in an aqueous caustic alkali solution, mixing the solution, and then reacting the solution with an etherifying agent.
CONSTITUTION: A high-viscosity, highly activated, uniformly alkali-distributed mercerized carboxymethyl cellulose soft powder is obtained by dissolving carboxymethyl cellulose in an aqueous caustic alkali solution (30W70wt% concentration) and mixing the resulting solution at 10W60°C. The mercerized carboxymethyl cellulose soft powder thus produced is etherified, for example, by heating it together with an alkylating agent such as an alkyl halide or an alkyl sulfate and a solvent therefor. The treating temperature is specified at 10W60°C because below 10°C the time is prolonged whereas above 60°C the product is difficult to take the form of a soft powder and tends toward taking the form of a hard lump.
