Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it easily possible to prepare a hard metal carbide in finely divided state useful as an extremely hard tool, by reacting a halogen compound of a specific metal or an OR group-containing compound of the metal with a specified aromatic compound, followed by calcination.
CONSTITUTION: A halide (e.g., chlorine, bromine, etc.) of an element, e.g., Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, etc. belonging to the group 4a to 6a of periodic table or a metal compound containing an OR group, e.g., alkoxy group, phenoxy group, etc., as a raw material is blended with an aromatic compound, e.g., a polyhydric alcohol having two or more hydroxyl groups directly linked to the aromatic carbon atom in one molecule as a carbon material. These compounds are reacted in a temperature range from -30W200°C for 1W5hr, and the reaction product is calcined in an inert gas atmosphere, e.g., Ar, He, etc. at 700W2,300°C. A metal carbide in finely divided state having particle diameter ≤1μ is prepared.
