Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an unsaturated polyester resin which is excellent in flexibility, impact resistance, water resistance, etc., by using 2-methylpropane-1,3-diol as all or part of the glycol component of the unsaturated polyester resin.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Methylpropane-1,3-diol, industrially obtained in large amounts in the manufacturing process of butane-1,4-diol in which propylene as a precursor is hydroformylated through allyl alcohol, is used as all or 10mol% or more of the glycol component of an unsaturated polyester resin, and an unsaturated dibasic acid (e.g., maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, etc.) or/and a saturated dibasic acid (e.g., terephthalic acid, phthalic anhydride, etc.) are used as acid components for the manufacture of an unsaturated polyester resin. The acid components and the glycol components are reacted to form unsaturated alkyd, and then the unsaturated alkyd is combined with a polymerizable monomer (e.g., styrene) to obtain an objective unsaturated polyester resin.
