Abstract

PURPOSE: To offer a foamed article which can absorb water with high efficiency and does not reduce its water absorbing rate, by sustaining a water-insoluble water-absorbing material powder in a foamed article taking advantage of the swelling by the solvent and the drying shrinkage.
CONSTITUTION: To a solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, etc., which does not dissolve a foamed material but swells it, is dispersed a powder such as one prepared by graft-polymerizing a hydrogel of, e.g., starch or cellulose, with acrylonitrile to make the hydrogel insoluble and then hydrolyzing the graft polymer. A flexible foamed article having open cells, e.g. a polyurethane foam, a sponge rubber, etc., which will swell when dipped in the solvent, is compressed and restored in the solvent. Thus, the cells of the foamed article are filled with the hydrogel, and the foamed article is then dried. An adhesive such as polystyrene may be dispersed or dissolved in the solvent, so that the hydrogel will be adhesively sustained in the foamed article.
