Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrophilic porous body useful for medical, hygienic, and gardening fields, eternally having improved hydrophilic nature, showing strength sufficiently fit for practical use by making an aqueous solution of fibroin porous by stirring, etc., followed by molding it.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material silk, e.g., raw sild of cocoon, etc. is refined to remove sericin. The prepared material is dissolved in a solvent, preferably an aqueous solution of calcium chloride, etc., and the solution is subjected to desalting through dialysis by a dalysis membrane so that a salt concentration is made 0.002W0.1wt%, to prepare an aqueous solution of fibroin. A gas, e.g., air, etc. is introduced to the aqueous solution at 1W50 little/minute from a thin tube with an inner diameter 0.3W5mm, to make the solution foamy. The foamy fibroin, for example, is quickly frozen, dried, and solidified. The resulting material is subjected to a crystallinity improving treatment, e.g., heat treatment, etc. at 50W130°C by saturated steam, to give the desired body having an integrated organization of a continuous pore structure with a pore ratio ≥50% and a speed of water absorption ≥10ml/min.
