Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the blocking of a drain pipe with impurities by providing the drain pipe with plural drain holes vertically provided in the bottom of the enclosed container of a cold trap device by which impurties are removed from a liquid metal.

CONSTITUTION: In order to remove Na₂O or other impurities contained in metallic Na used as a coolant for a nuclear reactor, the metallic Na is preliminarily cooled in a preliminary cooling tower 2 and then put in an enclosed container 3 provided inside a cooling tower 5. Since the container 3 is cooled with a fluid, e.g., nitrogen, air, etc., from outside, the preliminarily cooled liquid Na is further cooled, whereby impurities, e.g., Na₂O, etc., are separated out. The impurities are filtered through a filtering cylinder 6. In this case, the said impurities are deposited on the bottom 3a of the enclosed container 3, so that a drain pipe 9 having plural drain holes 10aW 10d in the vertical direction is provided in the bottom 3a, by which the blocking of the drain of liquid Na due to the deposition of the impurities can be prevented.
