Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable to use glow plug of an internal combustion engine for a long time at a high temperature, by forming a coating layer of silica glass over the entire surface of a heating element made of an electrically conductive sintered ceramic such as silicon carbide, excluding the portion for leading out an electrode. CONSTITUTION:Heating element 1 is obtained by heating an electrically conductive sintered ceramic 11 such as silicon carbide, for instance, in an oxidizing atmosphere of a temperature higher than 1,300 deg.C for more than one hour, and forming a uniform thin coating layer of silica glass 12 over the entire surface of the same excluding central portion 13 of the inner wall surface at the bottom and projected flange portion 10. Then, the heater 1 is inserted into metal holder 2 and rodlike center electrode 3 is also inserted for establishing electric connection between electrode 3 and bottom center 13 of heater 1, flange portion 10 and holding metal 2 by the aid of carbon powder 4, 9, and subsequently it is sealed through heating with insulating ceramic powder 5 and silicate glass being charged therein. With such an arrangement, sealing performance and strength of heater 1 are both improved by the function of silica glass layer 12, so that it is enabled to use the glow plug for a long time at a high temperature.
