Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, by the catalytic hydrogenation of a halogen-substituted phenylacetic acid derivative dissolved in a lower carboxylic acid or alcohol, etc., and the further hydrogenation in the presence of water added to the system on the equilibrium of the absorption of hydrogen gas.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [X is halogen; R1 and R2 are Hs, or alkyls; Y is OR3, SR3, NH2, NHCOR4, NR4R5 (R3 is H, alkyl, phenyl, etc.; R4 and R5 are alkyls) or halogen] is dissolved in a lower carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic acid, and/or a lower alcohol, e.g. methanol, and catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of a strong acid while introducing hydrogen gas into the system. When the absorption of hydrogen gas attains equilibrium, water is added to the system and the hydrogenation is continued to obtain the compound of formula II.
EFFECT: To obtain the object compound readily and in high yield.
USE: A modifier for antibiotics, and an intermediate for anti-inflammatory agents and analgesics.
