Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of polymers or an intermediate of medicines, pesticides, plasticizers, etc., in high yield, by the catalytic dehydration reaction of an α-hydroxy-n-valeric acid ester in a gaseous phase in the presence of calcium phosphate as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 2-, 3- and 4-pentenoic acid esters are prepared by the gas-phase direct dehydration reaction of an α-hydroxy-n-valeric acid ester in the presence of calcium phosphate as a catalyst. The catalyst is calcium phosphate optionally supported by an inert carrier such as silica gel and obtained pref. by calcining in nitrogen atmosphere at 400W600°C for 2W6hr and pulverizing to 5W50 mesh powder. Since the α-hydroxy-n-valeric acid ester used as the raw material can be easily prepared from n-butylaldehyde available industrially at a low cost, the process is industrially advantageous.
