Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Antibiotic antlermicin A having the following physicochemical and biochemical properties: Elemental analysis C, 59.33%; H, 7.20%, N, 1.98%. Molecular weight 1365 (based on titration equivalent). Melting point 199W204°C. [α]D28=-67.6° (C=1, methanol). Readily soluble in methanol and ethanol; soluble in ethyl acetate; sparingly soluble in chloroform, water, etc. Blue with conc. sulfuric acid; positive to the KMnO4, iron chloride reactions, etc.; quasi-positive to the ninhydrin reaction. Acidic substance. White powder. pKa is 3.9 (in 70% methyl cellosolve).
USE: An antimicrobial agent having a growth inhibitory activity against Gram-positive bacteria, e.g. bacilli including Bacillus subtilis and bacteria of the genus Micrococcus.
PROCESS: A strain of the genus Micromonospora, e.g. Micromonospora sp. T-90 (FERM-P No.5005), is incubated at 25W35°C, preferably around neutral pH, by the spinner culture method with aeration, and the objective antibiotic is extracted with an organic solvent, separated and purified from the culture fluid and bacterium body.
