Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent polymerization, by dissolving a nitrosophenol, a polymerization inhibitor difficultly soluble in styrenes, in a specified alcohol, ketone or aldehyde, and continuously feeding the resulting solution in the process for refining styrenes by distillation.
CONSTITUTION: (i) A nitrosphenol (e.g, P-nitrosophenol) is dissolved in (ii) a solvent (mixture) selected from an alcohol (e.g. methanol), ketone (e.g.; acetone) or aldehyde (e.g., butyraldehyde), having boiling pt ≤100°C and, if necessary, containing an aromatic compound (e.g., benzene), to obtain a solution of a polymerization inhibitor containing 5W30wt% of component (i). In the purification, by distillation, of a reaction product containing styrenes prepared by the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene etc., polymerization is inhibited by continuously feeding said solution.
EFFECT: No clogging of a feeder.
