Abstract
PURPOSE: On the oxidation of indane with oxygen, chromium or cobalt ion is used as a catalyst in the presence of an N,N-dialkyl lower saturated fatty acid amide under specific conditions to produce the titled substance used as a starting material for fine chemicals in high selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of at least one of N,N-dialkyl lower saturated fatty acid amides of the formula (R1, R2 are 1W4C alkyl; R3 is H, 1W4C alkyl) such as N,N-dimethylformamide or N,N-diethylactamide, a chromium ion and/or cobalt ion donor is used as a catalyst and indane is oxidized with oxygen or an oxygen- containing gas at a temperature of 40W150, preferably 60W120°C. The reaction is stopped so that the conversion may not exceed 60%, preferably at 10W60%, when a chromium catalyst is employed, and at 10W50%, when a cobalt catalyst used.
EFFECT: The present invention permits the utilization of the high-boiling fraction in coal tar.
