Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the sealing properties of a temperature-resistant cushion and to prevent the deterioration of the sealing material, by flattening an inorganic fiber mesh cylinder, rolling it from one end thereof to form a scroll, and rolling thereon a flattened metal mesh cylinder, which is then together with the former formed into a desired shape, so that a temperature-resistant cushion having inorganic fibers uniformly distributed therein is obtained. CONSTITUTION:Inorganic fibers comprising glass fibers or the like are knitted to form a mesh cylinder 2, and is then flattend, while being rolled from one open end thereof to form a scroll 3. A metal mesh cylinder 5 composed of knitted thin stainless wires is flattened, and is rolled from one folded end thereof onto the scroll 3 to obtain a double-membered scroll 6. The double-membered scroll 6 is compressed into a temperature-resistant cusion of various shapes. Accordingly, the inorganic fibers 1 are held within the double-membered scroll 6, and on the circumference of the inorganic fibers 1, only metal wires are present, so that if the temperature-resistant cushion is exposed to the exhaust gas, the inorganic fibers 1 cannot be blown away by the exhaust gas, and therefore, the sealing effect will be retained longer.
