Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate smaller size and less weight for IC application while improving response speed by extracting a phase modulation signal employing an LPF with a simple circuitry.
CONSTITUTION: Saturatable magnetic heads 2a and 2b as scale detecting elements separated at a space of (m+1/4)λ are arranged facing a magnetic scale in which a magnetic grid pattern of natural wavelength λ is formed recorded as the reference scale. Head 2a and 2b is each provided with detecting windings 3a and 3b and exciting windings 4a and 4b to each of which exciting currents i1 and i2 of frequency f0/2 having a phase difference of 45° from each other flows. Output signals from the heads 2a and 2b are fed to the LPF 23 through an addition amplifier 6 and a balance modulator 22 and a phase modulation signal of frequency f0/2 is extracted.
