Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily determine the acoustic velocity in a medium by finding the acoustic velocity from the measured values of the resonance frequency and the number of waves of an intrinsic mode by use of a sound source excited by a variable frequency oscillator or a wide band-pass oscillator and a resonator having an intrinsic mode resonated by the sound source.
CONSTITUTION: The output signal of a variable frequency oscillator 5 or a wide band-pass oscillator 5 is applied through an amplification circuit 4 to speakers 2. The output signal of a microphone 2 fitted to the side surface of a resonator 1 is introduced into a frequency analyzer 8 through an amplification circuit 7. By the frequency analyzer 8, the resonance frequency ωn and the frequency Kn of the intrinsic mode determined by the configuration of the resonator are sought. By the ratio of ωn to Kn the acoustic vealocity is determined. These operations can be automatically performed by a data processing device. Accordingly, the acoustic velocity can be easily determined even without knowledge as to the physical prop erty values such as the temperature and the pressure of the medium.
