Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for PET at a high reaction rate economically, by esterifying terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol batchwise while retaining part of the reflux from a rectifying column between the bottom of the rectifying column and a reactor.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid is esterified with ethylene glycol (hereinafter referred to as EG) batchwise in an esterification reactor 3 with a rectifying column 7 while retaining part of the reflux in a reflux retaining pot 12 provided between the rectifying column 7 and the reactor 3 to give the titled compound. The pot 12 is characterized by an overflow line 14, a reflux line leading the retained EG to the reactor 3 and a reflux line 16 connecting to the rectifying column 17. The titled compound with a low content of diethylene glycol can be obtained stably, and the method and the apparatus are effective for measures of energy conservation and resource saving.
