Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently a directly heated type cathode element having good characteristics, by uniting two thin metallic plates, which serve as filaments, with a metal strip of a greater thcikness then those of the metallic plates and having an elongated rectangular shape which serves as a substrate metal plate, and puncling it into a desired shape. CONSTITUTION:Between two sheets of thin, rectangular metallic plates 21 made of a Ni-W alloy or the like, is held an elongated rectangular metal strip 22 with its longitudinal axis aligned with those of the metallic plates 21. The metal strip 22 has a thickness greater than those of the metallic plates 21 and a width approximately equal to the diameter of a substrate metal disc and is made of Ni and a trace amount of a ruducing agent for an electron-emitting substance, such as Mg or the like. The metal strip 22 and metallic plates 21 are continuously united by laser or the like. The thus-united metallic plate unit is punched in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the elongated metal strip 22 as shown by the dotted lines in the drawing into a shape that consists of a disc-shaped substrate metal plate and a pair of filaments united integrally together. Each punched-out element is connected at both ends thereof with electrode terminals. In this manner, a cathode element of good characteristics can be obtained with extremely high efficiency.
