Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an antitumor agent, antibacterial agent, etc., in high yield, by oxidizing the enol-type salt of (±)-isotadeonal 12-monoacetal, and hydrolyzing the resulting warburganal monoacetal.
CONSTITUTION: Warburganal of formula I can be prepared, in high yield, by (1) oxidizing (±)-isotadeonal 12-monoacetal enol-type salt (pref. lithium salt) pref. with oxygen or molybdenum peroxide, and (2) oxidizing the resulting warburganal monoacetal of formula III by conventional method, e.g. with p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc. The titled compound is a strong antifeedant for Africal army worm which causes African crop pests, and exhibits strong antitumor, antibacterial, anti-yeast, and plant growth regulating activities. The compound of formula II can be synthesized from methyl farnesoate.
