Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of a polycarbonate esin, etc., in high conversion and yield, by reacting phenol and acetone using cysteine and a water-insoluble solfonic acid-type cation exchange resin as catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: Bisphenol A is prepared by condensing phenol and acetone in an inert solvent or in the absence of solvent, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a modified resin obtained by modifying pref. a cation exchange resin with cysteine, under a pressure of 1W5kg/cm2G at 50W100°C for 0.1W20hr. Since the presence of water in the reaction system gives undesirable effects to the reaction, the concentration of water in the reaction system is preferably maintained below 0.1wt%. The degree of modification of the cation exchange resin with cysteine is 5W20mol% based on the sulfonic acid group. If cysteine is added to the reaction system separately, its amount is 0.01W0.5wt% based on the sum of the phenol and acetone used as raw materials.
