PURPOSE:To operate a photodirectional coupler using a double refractive medium stably and highly efficiently by using optical fibers having the polarization retentivity of a light source for at least one optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber having polarization retentivity, for example, the one which is circular in both jacket layer 5 and clad 6 but is elliptical in core 7 or the one which is circular in both jacket layer 5 and core 7 but elliptical in clad is used for an input optical fiber 1. The linearly polarized light is then put in from the direction of an arrow 11 and if the direction of the plane of this polarization and the direction of the crystal axis of a double refractive medium 4 are suitably selected, it becomes possible to couple the same to the optical fibers 1 2' only but not to the optical fibers 1 2. In addition, the exit plane of polarization from the optical fibers is constant; therefore, the coupling characteristics thereof are maintained stably. In this way, the coupler can be operated stably and highly efficiently.
