Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrogen-storing alloy having excellent practicability by alloying Ti, Fe, and Hf in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:A ternary alloy of the formula Ti1-xHfxFey (where x and y are in the relationships 0<x<=0.2 and 0.8<=y<=1.15, most preferably in the relationships 0.01<=x<=0.05 and 0.95<=y<=1.05) is melted to form the ingot of a homogeneous phase alloy and then the ingot is pulverized into grains of a size of approx. several mm.. Then, the grains are put in a container and then the container is evacuated by a vacuum pump, filled with hydrogen gas at a pressure of approx. 10 atm or more, and then subject said alloy grains present to a hydrogenation treatment at room temperature so as to cause hydrogen to be absorbed and stored in the alloy. When releasing the hydrogen from the alloy, the container is opened at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, whereupon the hydrogenated alloy can easily release hydrogen reversibly. Because the conditions for treatment thereof such as temperature, pressure, and degassing time, are more eased than the conventional hydrogen-storing alloys, said alloy is excellent in practicability.
