Abstract
PURPOSE: To greatly raise the hardness and wear resistance of a high-Cr white cast iron by a method in which V is added to a high-Cr white cast iron so that the carbide of V besides the carbides of Fe and Cr is crystallized out and also the basic texture is changed into martensite.
CONSTITUTION: To a high-Cr white cast iron, which is used in a rock cruster mill, the parts of iron-making machinery, the parts of dredging ship, etc., requiring a high hardness and a high wear resistance, V (vanadium) is further added to obtain a white cast iron containing 2.4W3.6% C, <1.0% Si, 0.5W1.5% Mn, 14W17% Cr, <3% Mo, <1.2% Cu, <1.0% Ni, and 0.1W1.0% V. The said parts made of the white cast iron are subjected to the usual hardening heat treatment in which they are heated and kept at 900W1,050°C and then cooled and then cooled to a temperature, or -60°C, below the temperature at which transformation to martensite is ended. Thus, the basic texture is changed into martensite and a hard VC-type carbide besides (Fe. Cr)7C3-type hard carbides is crystallized out, so that the hardness and wear resistance of the high-Cr white cast iron can be raised further.
