Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a modified cation exchange membrane having excellent soil resistance and a large selective permeability for small-changed cations and consisting of a cation exchange membrane having on its surface a specific vinyl compd. or its polymer.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl compd. represented by formula I [R1: CH2, (CH2)2; R2, R3 and R4: (CH2)1W18, formula II or III; R5: H, CH3, formula IV or V; R6W R13: H, CH3, CH2CH3; X: Cl, Br, I, OH, 1/2 SO4; n: 0W20] or its polymer is allowed to be present on a cation exchange membrane in an amount of about 0.001mg/cm2 or more, which however dose not lower the critical current density of the ion exchange membrane to below 10% of the original value after modifying the membrane. The compd. of formula I (wherein n is 0 and R1 is CH2) may be typically synthesized by reacting a vinylbenzyl halide with an α,ω-tertiary diamine.
