Abstract

CONSTITUTION: The surface discriminating signal of specific frequency is recorded between a recording start point P2 for line shape recording lines 22 of a video disc 21 and a given point P1 at the external circumference end. This discriminating signal is detected as a static capacitance change via a playback stylus 26 and discriminated via a signal detection circuit 28 and a frequency discriminating circuit 31, and the circuit 31 produces a low level output according to the frequency at the detection of one side and a high level output according to that of another side. Further, the side of the disc 21 in playing can simply and surely be displayed via a hold circuit 32 and the like for the discrimination, without drawing out the disc from a jacket and observing the label.
