Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a copolymer suitable for a hydrophobic porous catalyst carrier with a large particle size, by a method wherein a polymerization initiator and a diluent are added to a vinyl monomer stock material to form a mixed liquid with uniform phase and this mixed liquid is suspended in a dispersing liquid to polymerize said vinyl monomer.
CONSTITUTION: A styrene type aromatic or an acrylic acid type aliphatic monovinyl monomer and polyvinyl monomer, a polymerization initiator such as benzoyl peroxide or the like and a uniform liquid-phase diluent with density of 0.9W1.2 and viscosity of 60W600 cps. are mixed and, subsequently, this mixed liquid is poured into a dispersion such as an aq. solution of gelatin, to prepare a suspension, and a polymerization reaction is carried out. Then, a copolymer with a large particle diameter of 1mmϕ or more, pref., 3mmϕ or more is obtained. Because this copolymer with a large particle diameter is hydrophobic and porous, it is suitable as a catalyst carrier.
