Abstract

PURPOSE: To shorten a propagating time of a combustion flame to obtain a high combustion efficiency by a method wherein a combustion chamber, formed into an oval or elliptical configuration and provided above a piston, is divided into a plurality of compartiments by partitioning walls and ignition plugs are provided in each compartment respectively.
CONSTITUTION: A cylinder hole 2 having an oval section is formed in a cylinder block 1 and a piston 3 having an oval section also is slidably fit into this cylinder hole 2. In a suction stroke, when a mixture is sucked into a combustion chamber 11 through two pieces of suction ports 12 opened at compartments C divided by a partitioning wall 10, this mixture is ignited and burnt by two sets of ignition plugs 16 near an end of a compression stroke. In this case, the combustion chamber 11 having a rectangular section is divided into two compartments C, therefore, combustion flames are propagated into all directions around a center of the ignition plugs 16, thereby, combustion time is shortened and the mixture in the combustion chamber 11 is burnt promptly and efficiently.
