Abstract

PURPOSE: To simply and stably provide titled material without using binder by a method wherein heat treated coal tar pitch is extracted by solvent so that the total amount or part of β component remains, and the remainder is calcined under a specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: Coal tar pitch is heat treated at 350W600°C to provide heat-treated pitch, whereby quinoline-insoluble (QI) product is generated in the pitch. The pitch is extracted by solvent so that benzene soluble component is removed and the total amount or part of β component remains. The extraction residue is calcined at 200W 450°C in inert or reducing atmosphere, providing a calcined product having more than 97wt% of benzene insoluble and more than 95wt% of QI. This calcination allows β component to form into QI product without losing its binding property, effectively preventing rupture and cracks in sintering of formed products. The calcined product as it is or after pulverizing is treated, without use of binder, for forming, sintering, and grahitization so that high density carbon material is produced.
