Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high molecular weight water-soluble polyacrylamide, suppressing the generation of polymerization heat, by polymerizing a W/O-type dispersion of a concentrated water solution of acrylamide, etc. in the presence of a water- soluble polyhydric alcohol using a water-soluble azo compound as an initiator.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A 45W90 (pref. 70W90)wt% aqueous solution of water-soluble vinyl monomers containing ≥50mol% of acrylamide is dispersed in (B) an organic solvent (e.g. cyclohexane) using (C) an oil-soluble polymer as a dispersing agent to obtain a W/O-type dispersion, which is polymerized in the presence of (D) a 3W6C water-soluble polyhydric alcohol (pref. propylene glycol) using (E) a water-soluble azo compound as radical initiator. The preferable ratios of C/B, D/A and E/A are 0.5W5wt%, 0.5W5wt% and 200W1,000ppm, respectively.
