Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a high quality optical fiber by a high speed spinning method in which an optical fiber containing silicon dioxide as a constituent is spinned and then an organo-tin compound is immediately adhered to the surfaces of the spinned optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: Immediately after an optical fiber containing silicon dioxide as part of its constituents is spinned, an organo-tin compound, e.g., methyl tin tribromide, methyl tin trichloride, etc., in liquid or gaseous state is adhered to the surfaces of the spinned optical fiber, whereupon the organo-tin compound is selective decomposed on the surfaces of the spinned optical fiber to form a tin oxide film because of the high temperature of the optical fiber. Thus, a high quality optical fiber which is free of fatigue and deterioration due to the intrusion of water, etc., into the cracks as seen in the case of the conventional plastic coat can be obtained without the needs to control the speed of spinning.
