Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an alkali-resistant glass fiber composition by using a Shirasu- based composition with a specific compounding ratio.
CONSTITUTION: The Shirasu-based composition used contains 60W70wt% Shirasu, 6W20wt% RO(R is Ca, Mg, etc.), 6W11wt% R2'O(R' is Na, K, or Li), and 8W 13wt% ZrO2(or SiZrO4), together with 0.01W0.2wt% F2, As2O3, or Sb2O3 as a fusion accelerator as needed. A purified Shirasu is mixed with an RO, an R2'O, SiZrO4, and a fusion accelerator as needed, and then the mixture is melted in a melting furnace for vitrification. Then, the melt is spun from a platinum bushing provided in a fore-house through a throat operation tank, coated with a condensing agent, rolled up into a cake form by a forming winder, and dried to obtain a long strand.
