Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high purity, by melting 4,4'-biphenyldisulfonic acid sodium salt with an alkali, dissolving the product in an alkaline aqueous medium, extracting the by-products from the alkaline aqueous solution with an alcohol or a ketone, neutralizing the solution with a mineral acid, extracting the titled compound with said solvent, and crystallizing the compound from the extract.
CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Biphenyldisulfonic acid sodium salt is molten with an alkali, and the reaction products are dissolved in an aqueous medium to obtain an alkaline aqueous solution. The by-products are extracted from the solution with an alcohol or a ketone which is slightly soluble or insoluble in water. The solution is neutralized with a mineral acid, and again extracted with the above solvent to obtain the titled substance, which is washed with water. The objective compound is crystallized from the solvent layer. The solvent is e.g. 1-butanol, 2-hexanone, etc. The extraction of the by-products is carried out at 50W85°C, and the neutralization and the extraction of the objective compound are carried out at 70W85°C.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be obtained easily, in high purity.
USE: Oxidation stabilizer of resin, intermediate of dye, and raw material of heat- resistant resin.
