Abstract

CONSTITUTION: A carbanilate of the formula (R is 1W4C alkyl or phenyl group; X, Y and Z are Hs, halogens, NO2s, etc.) is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst to give a methylenedicarbanilate. A brϕnsted acid, e.g. sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, or a Lewis acid, e.g. BF3 or PF5, having an acid strength ≤-3.0 as the acidity function value Ho is used in an amount of 0.1W500mmol per mol the carbanilate. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent, e.g. pentane, at room temperature to 150°C.
