Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide an apparatus capable of easily manufacturing the titled base material while preventing the adsorption of moisture on a porous glass preform by installing a preheating furnace, between a dehydrating furnace and a transparently vitrifying furnace, set to a temp. between the temps. of the furnaces and placing the furnaces in a closed system. CONSTITUTION:In apparatus 1 for continuously manufacturing an anhydrous quartz optical fiber base material by a VAD method, preheating furnace 6 set to a temp. above the temp. of dehydrating furnace 5 and below the temp. of transparently vitrifying furnace 7 is installed between furnaces 5, 7, and apparatus 1 is placed in a closed system provided with no opening except gas inflow holes 15, 17, 21 and exhaust parts 16, 22. Because of the closed system moisture in the open air is not adsorbed on porous glass preform 3. Even if the atmospheric gas contains moisture, since the temp. of apparatus 1 is gradually raised from dehydrating furnace 5 to vitrifying furnace 7 through preheating furnace 6, the moisture is not adsorbed on preform 3. Thus, an anhydrous quartz optical fiber base material can be formed easily and surely.
