Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a substituted phenoxycarboxylic acid derivative useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals effectively, by reacting a specific substituted phenol with an alkyl halide in the presence of a base and a phase transfer catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted phenol, e.g. 2,4-dichlorophenol or hydroquinone, expressed by formula I (R1 is OH; R2 is H, halogen, nitro, cyano, lower alkyl or trifluoromethyl) is reacted with an alkyl halide, e.g. 2-bromopropionic acid, expressed by the formual R3-X [R3 is formulas II, III, IV and V (R4 and R5 are Hs or lower alkyls)] in the presence of a base, e.g. potassium carbonate, and a phase transfer catalyst, e.g. benzyltriethylammonium chloride, to give a substituted phenoxycarboxylic acid derivative of formula VI.
