Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, useful as an intermediate of agricultural chemicals, easily and in high yield without the formation of side products, by the reaction of a dihalogenated alkane with a substituted phenol in the presence of an alkali and a surfactant.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula III (R is H, alkyl, halogen, nitro, etc.; m is 0W5; X is halogen) is obtained by the reaction of a dihalogenated alkane of formual I (X' is halogen which may be the same as X; n is integer of ≥2), e.g. 1,2-dichloroethane, with a substituted phenol of formula II, e.g. phenol, o-cresol, etc., in the presence of an alkali and a surfactant, e.g. polyoxyethylenesorbitan monolaurate. The amount of the surfactant to the substituted phenol is 0.0005W5wt%. Alkali is preferably used in more than the equimolar amount.
