Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a phenoxycarboxylic acid derivative useful as agricultural chemicals in high yield efficiently, by reacting a substituted phenol with a phenyl halide in the presence of a base and at least one type of polar solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted phenol of formula I [R is -CH(R1)COOR2, -CH(R1) CH2CH2COOR2, -CH2C(R1)=CHCOOR2 or -CH(R1)CH=CHCOOR2; R1 and R2 are Hs or lower alkyls] is reacted with a phenyl halide of formula II (R3 and R4 are Hs, OHs, lower alkyls, NO2s, CNs, halogens or CF3s; X is halogen) in a polar solvent, e.g. an alcohol or aprotic polar solvent, in the presence of a base, preferably an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, a hydroxide or carbonate thereof, to give a phenoxycarboxylic acid derivative of formula III efficiently.
