Abstract
PURPOSE: To selectively, easily and rapidly measure the concentration of nitrous acid in the specimen by immersing a microbe electrode using nitrification bacteria into the specimen and detecting the decrease in the dissolved oxygen in the microbe film corresponding to the nitrous acid concentration as the decrease in output current.
CONSTITUTION: A microbe electrode 11 formed by fixing the active bacterium layer of nitrous acid oxidation becteria 1 by a thin film 3 having microholes is immersed into the specimen contg. nitrous acid. If the components such as nitrous acid and oxygen in the specimen diffuse into the microbe film 1 through the porous film 3 of the electrode 11, the microbes oxidize only the nitrous acid and consume oxygen. In proportion to this, the dissolved oxygen of the part near an oxygen electrode diaphragm 4 decreases and the output current of the microbe electrode 11 decreases. A proportional relation holds between the decrease in this output current and the concentration of nitrous acid, and therefore if the amount or rate of decrease of the output current is measured, the ammonia concentration in the specimen is obtained.
