Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is an intermediate for the preparation of a medicine having a vasodilator action in high yield, by reacting an alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt of a dialkylxanthine with a dihalogenoalkyl group in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal salt of a compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are Hs or lower alkyls; however, R1 is not the same as R2) is reacted with an alkyl dihalide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, e.g. a tertiary amine such as triethylamine or a quaternary ammonium salt such as tetrabutylammonium bromide) to give a compound of formula II (X is halogen: A is 1W8C alkylene; R3 is lower alkyl) or formula III (R4 is lower alkyl).
EFFECT: The titled compound can be obtained only in one stage forming little by- products without requiring phenol causing many pollution problems.
