Abstract
PURPOSE:To keep the pressure of the mercury vapor contained in a bulb constant by bending a straight bulb to form a central bent portion, and further bending both end portions into U shapes in directions almost perpendicular to a plane that includes the central bent portion, thereby forming bent end portions each having a tip position. CONSTITUTION:At both bent portions 10a, 10b of a curved bulb 10 bent-formed substantially into a saddle shepe as a whole, are provided tip portions 15, 15 so that the bent portions 10a, 10b are cooled by the environmental air which flows into a globe 4 through openings 16, 16 formed therein. Owing to the above constitution, the areas of the curved portions 10a, 10b which are exposed to the environmental air are increased, and the temperatures of these areas become lower than any other parts of the wall of the bulb 10 within the globe 4. Accordingly, the mercury vapor pressure within the bulb 10 does not becom excessively high because of the low temperatures at the tip portions 15, 15, and the density of the mercury vapor contained in the space where discharge is carried out is restricted.
