Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce titled emulsion being excellent particularly in water resistance and chemical resistance, by polymerizing, in aqueous emulsion, a radically polymerizable monomer by using, as an emulsifier, maleinized polyisoprene having polymerizable unsaturations in the side chains.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous emulsion of polymer is produced by preparing maleinized polyisoprene by adding a maleic acid compound such as maleic anhydride to polyisoprene, viscosity-average MW about 20,000W150,000 so as to provide a half acid value of about 20W350; preparing a partially esterified product or a partially amidized product by reacting the maleinized polyisoprene with 1W10%, based on the total acid value of the maleinized polyisoprene, of a functional unsaturated compound containing a polymerizable unsaturated group and a hydroxyl group, an epoxy group or an amino group, such as 2-hydroxyalkyl group or glycidyl group- containing (meth)acrylate; and polymerizing in an aqueous emulsion, a radically polymerizable monomer such as styrene by using, as an emulsifier, the partially esterified product or the partially amidized product.
