Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the flexibility of a cocondensation resin, by reacting melamine with formaldehyde and ethylene each in a specified amount.
CONSTITUTION: One mol of melamine is reacted in an aqueous medium, with 1.5W 3.0mol of formaldehyde in the alkali range to form methylolmelamine, which is then reacted with 1/6W1mol of ethylenebisurea. Or 1/6W1mol of ethylenebisurea premethylolated with formaldehyde is reacted with methylolmelamine prepared in the same manner as above. The melamine/ethylenebisurea/formaldehyde cocondensation resin product thus prepared has flexibility as well as excellent hardness, water resistance and heat resistance, which are characteristic of melamine resins.
