Abstract

PURPOSE:To arrange so that cracks in steel material coating may be detected clearly, by blending an acid solution and a reagent which colors reacting with an iron ion and adding a small quantity of surfactant therein. CONSTITUTION:A prearranged dose of weak acid such as acetic acid, etc. of proper concentration which dissolves steel, penetrating into cracks in a coating on steel material, etc. and a reagent such as arizanine S, etc. which colors reacting with an iron ion, are blended. And to this blended solution, a small quantity of nonion or anion surfactant is added. This detecting agent is uniformly applied on the surface of steel paint coat and is left alone for two to three minutes. The detecting agent permeates inside through cracks, etc., reaching the inner layer of steel material where the solution-contacted portion dissolves. Then eluted iron ion and a coloring reagent react each other, developing a color. This detecting agent allows especially clear observation of tensioned cracks in the paint coat in sharp contrast.
