Abstract
PURPOSE:To measure the tidal current in the vast sea area in a short time by a method wherein a ground speed is obtained on board a ship by means of a radio distance measuring equipment, whereas a water speed is obtained from an ultrasonic wave through a wave transmitting and receiving device and both speeds are operated. CONSTITUTION:Radio waves are repeatedly emitted from a radio distance measuring device master station 1 on board to slave stations 2, 3 on land and the propagation time difference or a phase difference between them is measured and the location of the master station 1 is obtained. In this way, a ground speed and the azimuth can be known by knowing the change of position of the ship in a short time. Whereas, an ultrasonic pulse wave is emitted into the sea water through a wave transmitting and receiving device 5 which has an azimuth difference of 90 deg. to a water speed measuring device 4 to obtain the water speed by uuilizing a reflection of micro particles in the sea water, and at the same time, the azimuth of the ship is measured by means of a direction finding device 8. The water speed of the ship is a sum of a ground speed and a current speed of a tidal current, on this account, the flow speed of the tidal current can be obtained from performing a vector operation of both speeds through an arithmetic circuit 6. With this constitution, measurement of the tidal current can be performed in the vast sea area in a short time.
