Abstract
PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical fiber base material with high reproducibility in a short time by removing hydroxyl groups from a glass preform manufactured by a VAD method with a hydroxyl group removing gas under pressure. CONSTITUTION:Porous glass preform 2 is formed at the lower end of rodlike substrate 1 by a VAD method and set in hydroxyl group removing furnace 7. While feeding a hydroxyl group removing gas from introduction pipe 8 and keeping the internal pressure of furnace 7 about 5-20mm.H2O above atmospheric pressure, hydroxyl groups are removed from preform 2 to manufacture an anhydrous optical fiber base material. The pressurizing state is maintained by regulating the flow rate of exhaust gas with needle valve 11 of exhaust pipe 10 while detecting the internal pressure of furnace 7 with pressure gauge 9.
