Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect failures of a rotary cutting tool securely and automatically by a method wherein specified frequency components only are detected from acoustic emission (AE) signals generated from a cutting edge in a cutting operation. CONSTITUTION:A detector 3 fixed in a rotary cutting tool body 1 detects AE signals. The detected signals are inputted to an amplifier 6 through a wireless oscillator 4 and a receiver 5. The frequency components of 100kHz or smaller and 1,000kHz or larger of the outputs of the amplifier 6 are removed in a frequency discriminator 7 and the outputs of the remaining frequency components only are inputted to a comparator 8. The output of the comparator 8 is inputted to an alarm 9 to issue warnings.
