Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a highly water-absorbing, sanitarily safe polymer, by dispersing an aqueous alkali metal acrylate solution containing hydroxyethyl cellulose into a solvent in the presence of a sorbitan fatty acid ester.
CONSTITUTION: A 35wt%Wsaturated aqueous alkali metal acrylate solution containing a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator and hydroxyethyl cellulose is dispersed in an aliphatic hydrocarbon type solvent in the presence of a sorbitan fatty acid ester, HLB 3W6, and the resulting dispersion is polymerized in the absence of a crosslinking agent. In the production of an alkali metal acrylate polymer, the neutralization of acrylic acid must be performed by use of an alkali metal hydroxide before starting the polymerization, because the polymer is difficult to grind into powder. The degree of neutralization is 50W95mol%. As the apliphatic hydrocarbon which can be used, n-hexane is particularly preferred.
USE: Napkins, paper-diapers, etc.
