Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an oxygen-containing 1W2C compound such as methanol, in high selectivity, by the reaction of a mixed gas of CO and H2, in the presence of a catalyst comprising Rh or Pt, and an oxide of the IIa, IIIa or IVa group metal of the periodic table.
CONSTITUTION: An oxygen-containing 1W2C compound is prepared by reacting a mixed gas of CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) Rh or Pt and (B) the oxide of a metal of the IIa, IIIa or IVa group of the periodic table. The catalyst can be obtained by adding an aqueous solution or alcohol solution of a salt of the (A) element (e.g. chloride or nitrate) to the (B) component, removing the solvent from the mixture, and heating under the atmosphere of H2 or synthetic gas, or chemically reducing the mixture with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde. The amount of (A) is pref. 50W0.001wt% of the (B) component. The main components of the product are methanol and ethanol, and the carbon efficiency of the reaction is ≥50%.
