Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the oxidation and corrosion resistance, etc. of an Al diffusion coated layer by substituting powder of an alloy of a rare earth metal and other metal for part of Al powder in mixed powder for packing. CONSTITUTION:Powder of an alloy of a rare earth metal such as Y and other metal such as Al, Fe or Ni or rare earth metal halide powder is substituted for part of Al powder in mixed powder consisting of Al powder, a halide activator such as NH4Cl and an inert carrier. At this time, the amount of Y is adjusted to 0.05- 20wt%. A metal article made of Ni superalloy or the like is buried in the mixed powder and packed by heating in a nonoxidizing atmosphere of hydrogen or the like fed to diffusion cementate the rare earth metal in the metal article surface together with Al. By this treatment the corrosion and oxidation resistance of the resulting coated layer are improved without deteriorating the toughness and thermal impact resistance of the article.
