Abstract

PURPOSE:To maintain a stable casting state by detecting the abnormal deformation of a mold with noncontacting displacement measuring devices during continuous casting of a rectangular section ingot, and so adjusting the pouring conditions as to correct this abnormal deformation. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of noncontacting displacement measuring devices 6 are fixed and disposed to a frame erecting body 7 at varying heights and an equal interval in opposition to both end faces 5 of copper plates 2 in the long-side blocks of an assembled mold 1. The displacement signals (a) of the respective meausring devices 6 are outputted via an amplifier 8 to an arithmetic circuit 9. Next, the deformation patterns of the copper plates 2 by thermal expansion are detected with the circuit 9 and conditions of one or more out of the flow rate of cooling water for the mold, drawing speed, the supply rate of silicon powder, the amplitude and frequency of a vibrating device for mold, etc. are so adjusted that said deformation patterns assume in tended deformation patterns. As a result, ideal continuous casting free from breakout, etc. may be maintained.
