Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate removable attachment of tools for improving operability by locating a rotary prime mover such as motor on the rear of a spindle in alignment with the center line of the spindle.
CONSTITUTION: A spindle 4 is connected to and driven by a prime mover 31 through a shaft coupling 23. In the attachment and removal of a tool, the tool is moved close to an end of the spindle 4 manually or by an automatic tool exchanger. When a shank is inserted into a tapered hole 21 of a drawing bolt 19, the motor is energized. To remove the tool from the end of the spindle 4, the spindle is stopped, and the motor is rotated, in the direction opposite to that in the case of attachment of the tool, with the maximum torque to rotate the drawing bolt 19 backward so that the tool can be removed from the end of the spindle.
